There are so many reasons to read diverse books, but one of our favorites is the fact that by reading about characters of a different race, ethnicity or background, our world expands. It's a way of learning about people, society and ourselves.
Here are four of our favorites!

Destiny Lingers
by Rolonda Watts
Destiny, a New York City news reporter, discovers a red hair on her husband's pillow—and it isn't hers. In fact, the only redhead Destiny knows is her best friend. Destiny flees her beautiful Harlem apartment, returning to her roots in North Carolina as depression takes over. But as Destiny's marriage falls apart, fate brings police chief Chase McKenzie into her life. Can Destiny recover from the recent betrayal and a racially charged past to move forward with someone new? Filled with beauty and meaning, author Maya Angelou called for a sequel, saying "let the story continue."

The Moon in the Palace (The Empress of Bright Moon Duology)
by Weina Dai Randel
Young Mei is called to the palace to become one of the Emperor's concubines after the death of her father rips apart all that she's cherished. Mei's hope is to gain the emperor's favor so she may help her impoverished mother and fulfill her father's dreams. Mei has intelligence and curiosity on her side, but the palace grounds abound with enemies. This work of historical fiction is a compelling story of the early life of China's Empress Wu. A story of sacrifice, growth, power, and above all, love.

When I Was Puerto Rican: A Memoir
by Esmeralda Santiago
Esmeralda Santiago's story begins when she's a child in Puerto Rico. In her eyes, her family's poverty is much less of a concern than the turmoil between her parents. The taste of guava, warmth and sunshine all are part of her daily life. And then her mother decides to leave her father, taking Esmeralda and her six brothers and sisters to New York City. There, she will begin a sometimes frustrating, sometimes sad, sometimes beautiful new life. Filled with laughter, tears and strength, this memoir is about what it's like when your true home isn't in one place alone.

Ruby
by Cynthia Bond
This Oprah's Book Club pick reminds us what great taste Oprah has in books! The story of a man's love for a woman, and how he will do anything to protect her from a society that wishes to cast her aside. Ruby leaves the South for New York, escaping a painful past, but when she must return to her hometown, memories of a violent childhood shake her. Ephram Jennings, who has always loved her, must choose between the chance of a life with Ruby and loyalty to his own family. A novel of true love and the courage within our hearts, even at the darkest of moments.

Sometimes, we're in the mood for some reality in our fiction. We're talking characters showing us what it's really like for women in the workplace. Whether the protagonist is fighting discrimination or fighting to get ahead, there are some great and honorable messages in such books. Here are four of our favorite women power stories—each written by former industry insiders! Let them entertain and inspire you!

BIGLAW: A Novel
by Lindsay Cameron
Mackenzie Corbett is living the dream: a job as an associate at a big Manhattan law firm, a great salary and an awesome boyfriend. But things aren't always as good as they appear. A bitchy senior associate is after her, her boyfriend is pressuring her for more time together, and she's working on the deal from hell. Mackenzie won't be deterred from success—until a devastating investigation puts her future on the line.

The Creepshow: A Novel
by Adria J. Cimino
Wanda Julienne was the perfect employee. Until she had a baby. After maternity leave, Wanda returns to her fund management position in a glamorous Parisian office only to find her world turned upside down. Struggling to fight discrimination and harassment at work, and to maintain relationships at home, Wanda's life spins out of control. And the only way out may destroy everything she's so carefully built.

Opening Belle: A Novel
by Maureen Sherry
It's 2008, and Isabelle, a Wall Street star, looks like she has it all. But reality isn't so brilliant: Her office environment is reminiscent of a frat party, and at home, the workload isn't exactly equitable. Then the former love she never got over becomes her biggest client. Add to that the financial crisis, and changes—on many levels—are on the horizon.

Bond Girl
by Erin Duffy
The success of a young business school graduate at a prestigious Wall Street brokerage firm is put in jeopardy by the 2008 financial crisis. Hilarious and smart, this fast-paced novel will have you cheering for Alex, the protagonist, from start to finish.

If you're a die-hard Walking Dead fan, then you're probably asking, "When does the Walking Dead come back?" Actually, if you're a die-hard fan, you probably already know the Walking Dead returns on February 14, 2016. Just in time for Valentine's Day. How romantic!
To tide you over until then, we have some recommendations of books to read if you're a fan of the Walking Dead:

A Plague of Zombies: An Outlander Novella
by Diana Gabaldon
If you had to choose what you loved more, zombies or Outlander, would you be able to choose? Good news: Now you don't have to. Diana Gabaldon has written a fabulous zombie-themed novella set in the world of Outlander. Win-win.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
by Seth Grahame-Smith
I always meant to reading the original Jane Austen classic but it just sounded so boring (*ducks the inevitable thrown tomatoes*). But add in a few zombies and that's a totally different story. One I'd actually like to read. Now when people talk about Mr. Darcy I can act like I know what they're talking about (while envisioning his brains being chomped by the undead of the British Regency).

Zombie Coloring Book
by Nick Snels
Adult coloring books are all the rage, so why not make them even more fun by coloring zombie-style? We can't guarantee they'll be as relaxing as their not-undead counterparts, but they'll definitely entertain you.

The Very Hungry Zombie: A Parody
by Michael Teitelbaum and Jon Apple
This book is sitting on my shelf, safely out of reach from my children's hands. While I let them read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to their hearts' (and brains', mmm brains) content, this little gem of a parody is for my eyes only. Mainly because it's just scary enough to give the kiddos nightmares, while still being a delightfully enjoyable read for any adult.

So Now You're a Zombie
by John Austin
This "Handbook for the Newly Undead" will help you—freshly among the ranks of the zombies—learn to adapt to your new life. Sure, there are downsides of being a zombie (that disgusting smell is YOU) but there are upsides too (you no longer have to go to work!).

The Zombie Survival Guide
by Max Brooks
It's all fun and games until zombies take over the world. Then what do you do? Are you ready? Are you SURE? This book provides "trusted, proven tips" which is either a fib or means THERE ARE ALREADY ZOMBIES LIVING AMONG US. Do you really want to take that chance? Didn't think so.
